ARTSCHOOL PAYING OFF AS A PARENT
10/31/25

I had been trying to sketch out a way to make Derpy Cat from Kpop Demon Hunters for as early as August this year for my son. Like the majority of the population's collective consciousness, his brain was hijacked by this movie and he's been obsessed with it's characters-- especially the elaborate spirit messenger cat, Derpy. Figured if I could successfully make a Derpy Cat mask by the beginning of October, it would reduce the likelihood of me scrambling on Amazon for a last minute costume. Kept hitting walls as to how I could make a lightweight mask that was comfortable enough for a four year old with mild ADHD to wear for several hours. Thought of everything from making a balsam wood frame with the skin of a hulled out Derpy Cat plushie, to sculpting styrofoam blocks into some kind of mask/helmet. All my options felt like potential suffocation hazards. Thankfully my documented frustration with finding a solution resulted in my Instagram algorithm showing me a Zygote Brown video on making a Derpy Cat mask using her amazing cardboard templates. Discovering her archive of masks felt like discovering a treasure trove of possibilities and I downloaded her cat mask template immediately. Her video on revising the cat head into Derpy Cat looked straight forward enough. The pacing and length of the video made me believe that all this could be done within a couple hours over the weekend: start with an already cut and assembled cat head made out of cardboard, slap on some paper mache and paint, cut a styrofoam ball in half for the eyes, and you'll have enough time left in your afternoon to grab a blue sweatshirt and paint that for the body, right? RIGHT?

Though I have never been formally diagnosed as having ADHD, everyone who has ever known me can attest to me exhibiting the some of the more classic features of the disorder. The most obvious of them all being my complete blindess to how long a project will take. What I had assumed would be a casual weekend crafting session, scope-creeped itself into an unpaid part-time job that lasted almost two weeks. At one point, while hunched over in my backyard wearing a respirator and fervently sanding down the 2nd layer of modeling clay I had painted onto the already paper mache'd cardboard base, I wondered to myself out loud, "Is this too much?"

Fast-forward 72 hours later, and Ozzy was able to comfortably wear his mask to his preschool Halloween parade. Moms audibly moaned at my vagrant display of holiday crafting while kids shrieked in delight over seeing their favorite kpop cartoon cat. Ozzy

BIRTHDAY CAKE FOR DEB
08/30/25

4 layer chocolate cake. Crumb coat, filling, and large decorative areas made with stabilized whipped cream frosting. Flowers and detail work made with French meringue buttercream (left over from a macaron mix because I’m too dumb to make that kind of frosting from scratch)
  • Wilton #789 tip for decorative ribbon
  • Ateco #234 grass piping tip for shag
  • Wilton #81 chrysanthemum flowers
  • Wilton #199 flower base and filler accents
  • Wilton #16-22 decorative swirls and fills

I do not like the baking process of a cake because of the nuance and chemistry involved. It’s mildly infuriating for me to put all the time, material, and effort into a process only to have it fall apart or deflate. Also tossing away an imperfect cake hits some repressed 1st generation immigrant nerve inside me that can’t cope with throwing perfectly edible food away. So in the end, it’s usually cake mix + a can of coke zero or sugar free Dr. Pepper with maybe a sprinkle of nespresso powder. One time I made white cake mix + mixed berry Truly seltzer and thought I had unlocked a secret adult achievement: lowest effort baking with booze.

Decorating cakes however, I wish I could do all the time. I want to try pulling my own version of Xu Zhen’s Under Heaven and make paintings with thick, frosting-like impasto on a canvas. I wonder if it could be done with joint compound because it’s water soluble? Every time I’ve had to mix it, the texture felt exactly like handling frosting.

    LUCHA LIBRE THEMED BIRTHDAY INVITATION

Illustration for a lucha libre themed birthday party that the client did not end up using but I need to dump here because I spent an embarrassing amount of time creating it.

    VINTAGE DEAD SALMON HATS
    02/14/25

A salmon hat is a cultural fad displayed by orcas, where they wear dead salmon upon their heads. It was first observed in 1987 with southern resident orcas and was a relatively short-lived phenomenon.[1][2] In 2024, the behaviour was observed again with orcas in Puget Sound. The motivations for salmon hats are unclear, but other orcas will mimic the behaviour once it begins.

I haven’t posted anything to this blog in almost a decade because I wandered over to Reddit and doomscrolled there for a couple of years before quitting it completely after my mental health went down a toilet (on account of it still being a form of social media.)

I used to have another comic blog completely devoted to my breakup with my (at the time) longest relationship. It was a confessional comic that was a cathartic way for me to cope with having to end a very influential part of my life in order for both of us to move on and grow. I was politely asked by my ex to take it down but statute of internet limitations has passed (in my brain) and I want to post all those comics back up because I still think they were good.

Also I need a place to quickly dump all my artwork that is not associated with my adult job of being a PrOfESsiOnAl GrAPhIc DeSiGNer.

To anyone out there that’s still listening, hi– how are you?! And if this is just me screaming into the void (as per usual) well then, shit.

    BIANCA’S APARTMENT
    01/27/24

Drew an illustration of Bianca's first place in Highland Park as a house-warming gift for her new place.

I have grown up alongside her in various locations for over 30 years and the HP apartment had all the blunder years of our early twenties and the pseudo-adulthood of our thirties. it was such a memorable place and the last stronghold of affordable rent in LA.
